Katie Connolly demonstrates excellence in clinical nursing at Casey House in Toronto. Her clients are complex, since HIV’s co-morbidities and its psycho-social nature can present obstacles to care. In working with clients to determint appropriate interventions, Katie examines social determinants of health and strongly advocates for client voices in treatment plans. She also recognizes vulnerable people’s need for good care, joining a volunteer urban health bus to provide basic services while using her assessment skills to encourage individuals to seek further care or access resources. She uses harm reduction and communication skills as she sees sex trade workers each month, listening to those who may not have health professionals that attend to their needs. An exceptional community nurse working with HIV clients since 2006, Katie uses her skills to better clients’ lives.
