Abstract Submission Guidelines

To be selected, your abstract must address at least one of our five themes:

  • Accessibility: Even the best health services will fail if individuals, families and caregivers cannot gain access. Accessibility encompasses many elements including affordability, equity, timeliness and proximity. It also means ensuring there are no financial or transportation barriers and a full range of care services are available.
    • Example: in long term care, individuals can move into the facility of their choice in a timely manner
  • Person-centred care: one of the most effective ways to ensure people are healthy is to involve them, their families and caregivers in care decisions and provision. It starts by knowing the population’s needs (as individuals and as a group) and engaging people throughout the care process, including decisions around what types of services will meet needs. At its core, individuals, their families and caregivers are partners on the health-care team.
    • Example: in a community health centre, engaging the patient’s family in the development of and ongoing changes to the care plan
  • Health promotion and chronic disease prevention and management: this theme highlights the importance of empowering people to take charge of their own health. It focuses on including care plan elements that help patients/clients improve and maintain their overall health. If a person has a chronic condition, efforts can be directed toward supporting them to identify elements of their care that they can manage independently.
    • Example: in a rehabilitative centre, initiating plans that ensure patients understand and can incorporate activities into their daily lives to help reduce the likelihood of accidental falls
  • Technology and innovation: when used appropriately, technology can make health-care delivery faster, safer and more convenient while reducing costs. Innovation means being open to change, putting skills to best use, adopting proven or promising practices, being curious about how things could be done better and responding to evolving trends.
    • Example: using applications on mobile devices to securely and remotely access patient/client health information
  • Cooperation and collaboration: good health care requires coordination between individuals and groups with a broad range of skills and knowledge, including patients and families. At the care-delivery level, cooperation and collaboration deals with innovative team-based care. More broadly, this theme deals with the social determinants of health, which recognize that health is not only determined by health care. The health system is situated inside a population’s social condition and works in conjunction with other sectors such as education, immigration and housing. This means it is appropriate for health-care providers to speak up for policies that build up social supports and other resources.
    • Examples: in hospice care, nurses working with personal support workers to reduce social isolation of the patients

Presentation formats

You can submit an abstract for any of the following types of presentations:

  • PechaKucha 20X20
    This dynamic and engaging format allows for 20 slides, each lasting 20 seconds, for a presentation of 6 minutes and 40 seconds. It is an efficient and energetic means to present on a topic in a short and concise manner. You are encouraged to put images on your slides rather than something the audience has to read. The session will be moderated and the room will be equipped with a projector, screen and computer.
  • Solution labs
    Each solution lab is an oral presentation 20 minutes in length followed by 10 minutes for discussion. Your presentation should have a coherent structure and a clearly stated purpose. It should provide descriptive information, including necessary contextual detail, and report on research findings, evaluation results, lessons learned and best or promising practices. The room will be equipped with a projector, screen and computer.
  • Panels
    Panels should include a minimum of two and a maximum of three presenters addressing a common issue or topic from different perspectives followed by an interactive discussion. Each panel must also provide a moderator. These sessions are 90 minutes and must include a minimum of 30 minutes for interactive discussion. Panelists and moderator should be listed as co-presenters. The room will be equipped with a projector, screen and computer.
  • Innovation stations
    Innovation stations are posters. Material is mounted on a poster board (approximately 4 feet/122 centimetres high by 8 feet/244 centimetres wide). We will schedule a time for you to be available at your station to give attendees an overview of your project and answer questions. Abstracts should be informational and should report on work that has been completed, not in progress. No audio-visual equipment will be provided for innovation stations. A poster presentation award will be granted at the end of the convention.

Submission form requirements

You can cut and paste your abstract text from any software into the online abstract submission form. To ensure anonymous review, do NOT include names of authors and organizations in the abstract text.

You will require the following information to complete your abstract submission:

  • Title (should be brief and reflect the content of the abstract)
  • A two-sentence description of your presentation
  • 50 word biography for each presenting author, including title(s), credentials and organization(s), which will be used for introductory purposes. Do not include list of authors in your abstract text.
  • Primary contact person (only this person will receive correspondence)
  • Presentation format — (select only one of the four formats available)

Abstract Submission Guidelines

All abstracts will go through a blind peer review and will be selected according to how well they meet our submission criteria.

  • Only standard abbreviations should be used and kept to a minimum.
  • Abstracts may be submitted and presented in English or French and, if accepted, will be presented in the language of submission. Simultaneous interpretation will be provided in two of the presentation rooms.
  • Abstract submissions must be structured as follows:
  • Learning objectives
  • Activities, methods, innovations
  • Outcomes, results, lessons learned
  • Conclusion
  • Maximum word counts (not including abstract title or other information)
    • PechaKucha 20X20 presentations, solution labs and innovation stations: 150 words (950 characters, including spaces); longer abstracts will not be reviewed
    • Panel presentations: 400 words (approximately 2,500 characters, including spaces); longer will not be reviewed
  • All submissions will receive an e-mail confirmation receipt. If a confirmation is not received, please contact CNA at dross@cna-aiic.ca or 1-800-361-8404, ext. 214. Abstract submissions received via e-mail, fax or mail will not be accepted.

Review Criteria

Your abstract, which should be of interest to a broad range of nurses, will be evaluated based on the following criteria:

Abstract themes — clearly addresses at least one of the five abstract themes
Clarity — clearly states what other nurses can learn from the presentation or display
Relevance — explains how the abstract reflects the convention theme
Quality — evidence-based, quality of intent, spelling and grammar
Application — describes how the outcomes are applicable to nursing policy or practice
Innovation — displays originality, innovation and nursing leadership
Knowledge translation — addresses strategies to disseminate findings and information (e.g., via partnerships, stakeholder engagement)

If your abstract is accepted

  • You will be notified by February 12-14, 2018.
  • You must register and submit the appropriate fee by March 29, 2018, to be included in the convention program and eligible to present.
  • You will be responsible for your conference registration fees and all related expenses such as accommodations and travel.
  • Your abstract will be posted on the CNA convention website. Abstracts will be published as they are received and will not be edited.
