Canadian Nurses Association welcomes new Manitoba member
September 30, 2015, Ottawa — The Canadian Nurses Association (CNA) is welcoming a new member to its national community of registered nurses: the Association of Registered Nurses of Manitoba (ARNM). The newly-incorporated organization is the result of a transition in the College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba’s (CRNM) membership position with CNA.
“CNA is pleased that a new association is here for RNs in Manitoba, ensuring they’ll have an advocacy voice at home and across the country,” said CNA president Karima Velji. “A strong, unified connection between the provincial/territorial colleges and associations and national groups means a greater potential for effecting meaningful change in health-care transformation.”
Manitoba recently changed its Regulated Health Professions Act so that all health professions are regulated under one set of rules, rather than through rules for each profession. This development meant CRNM could no longer be a member of CNA, a professional associate and national advocate for the nursing profession. As a result, a group of dedicated and engaged RNs from Manitoba undertook the initiative to establish ARNM.
CNA’s membership is made up of provincial/territorial nursing associations and colleges, the Canadian Network of Nursing Specialties, independent RNs from Ontario and Quebec and retired nurses from across the country. CNA is also the only Canadian member of the International Council of Nurses (ICN). Members of CNA are automatically members of ICN.
