Health care is an ever-evolving field that will require you to adopt lifelong learning to practise safely and competently. Most employers make funds available for professional development.
Many registered nurses, for example, choose to become certified in their field of expertise. The certification credential, which is offered by the Canadian Nurses Association, demonstrates that the nurse is qualified, competent and up-to-date in one of 19 nursing specialties or areas of nursing practice. Other nurses opt to obtain a graduate degree or teaching diploma.
You will also want to read nursing magazines, attend conferences and workshops, and take courses to upgrade and increase your knowledge and skills.
