Better Health

Of course we all want better health, but what does that phrase mean in the context of health reforms or health policy discussions? The National Expert Commission looks at the Better Health goal in the context of the broad determinants of health – all those things outside the traditional health care system that definitely have an impact on our health. We know, for example, that income, poverty, education, race, and other variables have even greater influences on our health than formal health care.

Within the Commission’s Better Health, Better Care and Better Value framework for inquiry, the Better Health theme has far-reaching implications for Canadians and for the nursing profession.

To inform the Commission in areas where more advanced analysis and knowledge than could be gleaned from existing literature was needed, three peer-reviewed research syntheses were commissioned through our partner, the Canadian Health Services Research Foundation (CHSRF). The commissioned research illuminates the Commission’s triple aim framework of Better Health, Better Care, Better Value.

To gain a better understanding of the impact of the social, economic and environmental determinants of health, a research study entitled Better health: An analysis of public policy and programming focusing on the determinants of health and health outcomes that are effective in achieving the healthiest populations was commissioned.
