Ottawa, September 22, 2016 – “Through the International Council of Nurses and its Canadian president, Judith Shamian, CNA is pleased to have had input into the report of the High-Level Commission on Health Employment and Economic Growth – Working for Health and Growth: Investing in the Health Workforce. As the fourth-largest member of ICN, CNA has over time contributed significantly to discussions on the global health workforce. It is important that governments continue to implement policies to address the significant health labour market challenges we will face in the coming years.
“The report highlights the key role nurses will continue to play in the global health workforce and economic growth into the future. It also clearly demonstrates the need for health system adaptation and change to meet population needs. This most recent global analysis reinforces our commitment to improve access and effectiveness of home- and community-based care for all Canadians — and to be a model for others. By prioritizing health promotion and disease prevention, optimizing the scopes of practice of nurses, and using team-based care delivery models, we can address the inefficiencies and rising costs of the dominant acute care-centred models. As evidence shows, expanding nurses’ scopes of practice greatly improves client-centred care, access to care, efficiency and health system integration.
“We are proud to see Canadian leadership on the world stage and we will continue to promote nursing internationally. We will also continue to work with our global partners to identify and adopt best practices to improve Canada’s publicly funded health-care system.”
