The Canadian Nurses Association (CNA) and the Fellows of the Canadian Academy of Nursing extend our gratitude to the Right Honourable Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada, for his contributions to health and health care during his tenure.
Prime Minister Trudeau’s leadership included significant efforts to address some of Canada’s most pressing health challenges. His government prioritized the reinstatement of the chief nursing officer role in 2022, enabling critical nursing leadership at the national level. Other notable advancements include commitments to improving Indigenous health, navigating the hardships of the COVID-19 pandemic, and advancing programs to address poverty reduction, mental health care, universal daycare, pharmacare, and dental care.
These efforts, paired with historic agreements such as the renegotiation of the Canada Health Transfer and federal-provincial-territorial health accords, underscore the importance of collaboration and investment in health systems.
As nurses, we also recognize that gaps remain. With 6.5 million Canadians still lacking access to a primary care provider and health care consistently ranked as a top priority by voters, much work is needed to ensure equitable and timely access to care for all. Canadian nurses urge all leaders to advance efforts to improve access to care, remove legislative and funding barriers, and optimize the contributions of all regulated nurses across the health system continuum.
In June 2023, the CNA board had the opportunity to meet with Prime Minister Trudeau during the International Council of Nurses Congress in Montreal, reaffirming our shared commitment to the health and well-being of all Canadians.
Looking ahead, CNA and the Fellows of the Academy remain steadfast in advocating for a stronger, more equitable health-care system. We call on leaders across the political spectrum to continue prioritizing health in the years ahead.
Canadian nurses are ready to collaborate with policy-makers, health-care partners, and communities to ensure that health remains at the forefront of Canada’s national agenda.
