Ottawa, June 12, 2017 — Lisa Ashley, a senior nurse advisor at the Canadian Nurses Association and chair of the Chronic Disease Prevention Alliance of Canada, issued the following statement today after the release of an open letter to the minister of agriculture in support of a healthy eating strategy:

“The Canadian Nurses Association is pleased to support the call from many health organizations to restrict unhealthy food and beverage marketing to kids and increase robust front-of-package nutrition labelling. A majority of Canadians do not eat enough fruits and vegetables. Processed food consumption is associated with higher rates of obesity, so it is important to implement policies that will stimulate healthy innovations by Canadian food and beverage companies.

“The implementation of such a strategy will reduce the incidence of diet-related disease by encouraging consumers to eat whole real foods produced by hard-working Canadian farmers. The cost of inaction was estimated to be $26 billion in 2015, so implementing the strategy would produce substantial savings in our health-care system and stimulate the economy.”
