Watch the Canadian Nurses Association (CNA) Fellowship Induction & CNA Awards Ceremony 2025, a national celebration recognizing the outstanding achievements and leadership of Canada’s nursing community.

The event featured the induction of new Fellows into the Canadian Academy of Nursing — nurses whose exceptional contributions in leadership, scholarship, research, clinical practice, and policy have advanced health care in Canada and beyond. Fellowship represents a mark of distinction and a commitment to shaping the future of nursing.

The ceremony also highlighted recipients of the CNA awards of recognition, including the CNA Values Awards, the Future of Nursing Awards, the CNA Order of Merit Awards, the Sapphire Award, and the CNA Legacy of Excellence Award. These honours celebrate nurses and organizations whose dedication, innovation, and impact are transforming nursing practice and the health system.

Together, this event shines a spotlight on the voices and vision of nurses across the country whose leadership continues to elevate the profession and improve the health of communities.

The first Anti-Indigenous Racism Knowledge Sharing Event, which was held in September 2025, was a groundbreaking initiative aimed at addressing anti-Indigenous racism within the health-care system. This virtual event brought together health-care professionals, policy-makers and community leaders to share knowledge, experiences and strategies to create a more equitable and culturally safe health-care environment.

Anti-Indigenous racism is a direct result of the dark legacy of colonization in Canada. Embedded in systems, First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples are significantly disadvantaged and often harmed. This leads to many social challenges and health disparities that require multifaceted and targeted solutions.

In Canada, CNS have experienced uneven and, at times, turbulent times in efforts to establish, sustain and grow the role and optimize their impact. We will report on a study of the CNS workforce in BC to describe current state, insights from senior leaders, and policy recommendations to strengthen the CNS role as high impact leaders of clinical care, systems transformation, advancement of nursing practice, and evaluation and research.

The 3rd and final webinar in a series on nurses’ mental health, this webinar will shine a light on ways to measure the wellness of nurses and evaluate the initiatives being used to support them.

Join us for the second session on Wednesday, June 25, 2025 (1500 to 1600 hours EDT) hosted by CNA in our three-part webinar series, where Dr. Chapman will provide an overview of the NRT with a specific focus on the theme, Organizational Mental Health & Wellness Supports. During this session, you will learn about effective and impactful implementation strategies that promote mental health, safety and wellness from organizational leaders from three different provinces (NS, NB & ON) in workplace settings along the continuum of care and in different sectors. This second session will be hosted by CNA CEO, Dr. Valerie Grdisa. Presenters will include Dr. Chapman, CNO of Canada; Rev. Dr. Debra Orton, Spiritual Health Coordinator, Valley Regional Hospital (NS); Jacqueline Gordon, Corporate Director of Nursing & Chief Nursing Officer and Christie Ruff, Executive Director of Culture and Wellbeing, both at Horizon Health Network (NB); and Miae Kim, Director of Quality, Risk & Corporate Performance, Canadian Mental Health Association Simcoe County (ON).

Three nursing organizations, Canadian Federation of Nurses Unions (CFNU), Canadian Federation of Mental Health Nurses (CFMHN) and Canadian Nurses Association (CNA) have come together with Dr. Leigh Chapman, Chief Nursing Officer of Canada to address a major theme within the Nursing retention toolkit: Improving the working lives of nurses in Canada - Canada.ca: Organizational Mental Health & Wellness Supports. Join us for the first session hosted by CFMHN in our three-part webinar series, where we’ll provide an introductory overview of the Toolkits developed for organizational leaders to support you to thrive as a professional and achieve optimal mental health and wellness. This session will highlight the purpose, structure, and key features of evidence-based resources within a Toolkit(s), and how these tools can be effectively used in workplace settings along the continuum of care and across different sectors.

The first session is on June 18, 2025 (1300 to 1400 hours EDT) and will be hosted by CFMHN President, Don Leidl. Presenters will include Dr. Melissa Corrente, BA, BEd, MEd, PhD, Senior Research Associate, University of Ottawa on behalf of the Canadian Health Workforce Network (CHWN) and Kamlesh Tello, MSc, Manager, Prevention and Promotion Initiative from the Mental Health Commission of Canada (MHCC). This session will set the stage for deeper dives in subsequent webinars and offer attendees the opportunity to engage with the teams behind the work.

This session will begin with a special celebration of the recipients of the King Charles III Coronation Medal — individuals whose outstanding contributions reflect the values of service, environmental stewardship, youth empowerment, and diversity championed by His Majesty. We will unveil the full list of recipients, all of whom have made tangible contributions to nursing, health, and the well-being of communities in Canada.

This will then follow with a pre-taped video with Howard Catton, ICN CEO, where he will highlight global trends from the International Nurses Day (IND) report and how it relates to Canadian nurses. He will also share ‘what keeps him up at night’ and he will respond to questions posed by CNA members. This session will end with an opportunity for participants to engage in an interactive discussion about global trends and the Canadian context.

As artificial intelligence (AI) continues its rapid integration in health care and our daily lives, the need for nursing to engage with this technology also intensifies. Opportunities to enrich digital literacy for all nurses will allow the profession to step into critical AI conversations regarding ethics, efficacy, design and implementation, regulation, policy, and education. The power of nurses has perhaps never been as urgently needed in a technological evolution as it is now to ensure AI is used to enhance compassionate, evidence-informed system transformation and care.
