Ottawa, November 9, 2017 — CNA president Barb Shellian welcomed today’s announcement by Minister of Families, Children and Social Development Jean‑Yves Duclos about new financial support for family caregivers, which will come into force on December 3, 2017:
“Today’s announcement of new employment insurance benefits for caregivers is welcome news for the patients that nurse practitioners (NPs) and nurses are caring for every day in Canada. This much-needed support will help family caregivers juggle the difficulties of caring for a loved one while upholding their employment responsibilities. These new measures will also provide families with greater flexibility and options for providing care either at home or in their communities.
“We also welcome a new measure that enables NPs to sign certificates for their patients. This is great news both because it will provide easier and more timely access to the benefits patients deserve and because NPs practising across the country are the primary care providers for over three million people living in Canada.
“We were pleased to have been consulted along with the Nurse Practitioner Association of Canada on these proposed changes.”
